WHY DOES NOT THE FIRST CALAFIA DOLL HAVE A FACE?
This doll is a novelty mother-daughter collaborative concept piece that intentionally bears not a face for all of the missing elements of African lineage. She is faceless because she was not seen as a queen and remains faceless because so many Black, Indigenous, People of Color remain unseen.
HERSTORY
Calafía, was first conceived in the mind of an ancient Spanish author. Her queendom of California bears her name and while too, she is the first American Superhero, she was dethroned in 1848 and has remained invisible until now. On this day, the 9th day of September in 1850, California entered statehood without Her Majesty Calafia! Can you believe it? CALIFORNIA IS ME® is helping realize the vision of Garcí Rodríguez de Montalvo. Join us!
