CALIFORINIA IS ME is a campaign to educate the public and create awareness of the etymology of the name of California for action in restoration. Did you know “California” is an ancient Spanish invented name and named after Black women?

ISSUE 2

Black history has been washed away.  This ancient history is an example. A righteous white man named Rev. Edward Everett Hale of Boston and Harvard College discovered the etymology and origin of the name of California in 1862 and 1864 and lit the candle of truth; however history blew out its flame.  (click here for evidence).

Fact: When Mahalia Jackson said, "Tell 'em about the dream, Martin!" Dr. King gave his famous speech on the steps of the Lincoln memorial.

We all need a little motivation.

Just like with  black women of Hidden Figures: Katherine Johnson (first black female NASA mastermind mathematician helping break barriers of the Space Program), Dorothy Vaughn (first black female NASA computer engineer), Mary Jackson (first black female NASA aeronautical engineer), the entire department of black female NASA human computers and Henrietta Lacks (first person and black female host of the extraordinary replicating perpetual cancer cell supply in medical research). Now it has arrived that we have another hidden figure-the black Queen Calafia, the name behind the name "California" of an island of beautiful, strong, and courageous black women.  How unique, right?  No other state in the United States of America has such a unique story attached to its name.  Making California the only state in the USA having these attributes. Queen Calafia and California warriors (current day serena williams - world's greatest athlete)!

Let's celebrate this is a significant fact in American women's and black history! The contribution of black women in the fabric and foundation of the USA, should not be overlooked, no matter fact or fiction.  It is significant due to its antiquarian time and its rarity in American and black history.

FUN FACT

Found in a Spanish fiction romance book, the first time "California" is used in history is summed up here (see Evidence for 1510 and 1864 sources): Queen Calafía's California name and origin lends a meaning in short: a Terrestrial Paradise island of only beautiful, strong, and courageous black women living like Amazons, with gold tools and griffins, where the only metal on the island was gold. In 1510, Spanish author, Garcí Rodríguez de Montalvo wrote this romance novel, inventing "California" the name on the strength of the black woman in the 16th Century! Thus, it is an ancient name (from the Medieval to the Renaissance Ages) of Spanish claims prior to the usa being formed. thus, it is the only state in the USA whose namesake is named in honor of a group of women and specifically black women. Sound familiar? To make it plain, Queen Calafía is the Real Wonder Woman. Eureka! To celebrate this unknown fact, we fashionably founded California Is Me to wear a proud piece of rare American history that attributes blacks not just to Slavery, but royalty.

Once we discovered an article written in 1864 that referenced an ancient Spanish romance novel published in 1510 revealing that the source of California's state name is the name of a fictional all black woman golden island ruled by black female character Queen Calafía where these California warrior women had beautiful bodies, extraordinary strength, courage and passion wrapped up in it, we were hooked! (See Evidence).  Rare is the story like this, as is the mounds of facts we have found through extensive research.  One being, the name California is the only state in the USA whose namesake is named in honor of a group of women, specifically black women.  As such, it is a factual golden nugget of truth of history in the golden state name interwoven from a fictional all black woman golden Terrestrial Paradise island. Apparently, a Spanish explorer chose to transfer the name from a romance novel to real life when he gave the land a name!  How unique!

at a nsbe, d.c. tutoring class, I had asked a young prospective engineering student in ne, d.c. what it felt to her to know that her likeness and her image was in the state of California's very name.  She said, "there's nothing done on black girls, nothing done on black girls!".  So, I sought out as engineers do, to fix a social problem, in the vein of Charles Hamilton Houston.  well, we hope to change this direction with this fashion line for sure!

 IMPACT

Some of history's greatest literature, fact or fiction, is threatened by a male interpretation, explanation and/or omission.   The inspiration a child gains from a superpower comic-book figure or a baseball player or president are all powerful and important for growth stages.  As adults, negative black images or missing positive black images in media or education negatively affect how blacks are viewed and instills inappropriate fear where none directly stems from a skin color. Objectifying women in images or absent powerful women imagery negatively affects how men view women and instill inappropriate weakness where none directly stems from a brain.  Striking positive stories or omitting them from history is dangerous to humanity.  Such imagery increases stereotypes as reported by Common Sense Media. (Click here: Common Sense Media.) See "A Girl Like Me" video below.

"Each one teach one"

SIGNIFICANCE / WHY YOU SHOULD CARE

It is a feeling of being cheated and stripped of history of black women's rightful image and meaning as few are aware of the primeval heritage of California.  It is important for black women to know their history.  If a society lacks positive images of blacks period, it makes it easier to harm or kill an image you don't identify with.  If you look like the thing that media or history has repetitively shown is evil or bad, you become an easier target to not simply not care about them or fight racism off wherever it appears. The essence of you being a human is psychologically targeted and brainwashed through an unfocused distorted lens.  On this scale of humanity you are at the least, a negative factor and at the most, a non-factor; nevertheless all factors are destructive as blacks or women travel from home to our jobs or just driving or walking down a path trying to return home. We have seen spikes of this recently in murders of black men-inward amongst themselves and externally by Americans.  Similar to a deconstructed  Double V campaign of WW II (the world then is now America, the America then is now the black man).  Ask yourself, would you like it if Elvis Presley was made black? Or Little Richard was made white?  It would erase the contributions of each race. Possibly there would be no Justin Timberlake or Usher. Further, since we are on entertainment, the more this true unknown information surfaces to the masses, perhaps we will find more Hollywood colorful films and an appreciate of all colors.  "Why did not Powers carve his state of California out of the blackest Egyptian marbles. Eureka!" - Rev. Edward Everett Hale
